Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are built with normal web technologies like HTML, CSS and Javascript but look and behave like native web apps. They can be a fantastic option for organisations that want to provide the functionality of an app with a lower setup and maintenance cost.
Obviously all websites we build are responsive so they adapt and scale to present visitors with the best possible display of the website content for their particular screen size. Mobile Web Apps or Progressive Web Apps go much further – they are completely separate to the website (although they may share some content) and are much more akin to a native app that you use on your phone.
There are a number of advantages to PWAs over native apps, including:
- They are platform and device agnostic so there’s no need for different versions for each mobile operating system.
- Users don’t have to download regular updates in the same way as they do with apps. The mobile site can be updated immediately at any time.
- You can send updates to users via push notifications giving you another way apart from email marketing to re-engage your audience.
